Two Historic Impressive Aero Engines join us in 2018 for Sywell Classic: Pistons & Props.
David's Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, manufactured in 1943 at the Derby factory, was
originally fitted to an Avro Lancaster. In 1945, the engine was upgraded and fitted to an
Avro York transport aeroplane and, in and the early 1950s fitted to a bomber for the
Spanish Air Force. The engine was returned to the UK in the 1970s and used in a research
facility for some years before David acquired it in 2007. He completed an eight-year
restoration programme in 2015.
Patrick’s Bristol Hercules engine was fitted to a Handley Page Hastings, C Mk2. It is a 216
variant producing 1,690 horse power at take off boost. These engines were fitted to many
different heavy aircraft throughout its production life. For example Mk3 Halifax onwards
and the BII Lancaster. This engine was recovered from a museum in Yorkshire were it
had been left untouched on display for many years and became seized. After a stripdown,
Patrick Smart and Peter Irving rebuilt engine was as a ground running example.
